A new year!

2020 is almost coming to an end. It’s safe to say; WHAT. A. YEAR. First off, let’s get all of the clichés out of the way. It’s almost the end of a hectic year. A year in which we had to keep our distance from one another, but somehow felt closer than ever. A year where we might’ve had to say goodbye, but luckily we were also lucky to say hello to new people. And that includes an amazing amount of Netherlanders!

With the end of this year, it is also the end of an era! After 8.5 years the amazing Elmer (@Elmeraculous) and Arjen (@haayman) have decided to pass the baton to a very eager new team.

This new team, consisting of Pieter (@Staaksie), Mayke (@disgvises), Marcel (@msteeman), Jeanique (@PhotoJeanique) and Anna-Maria (@puur), is looking forward to making the @Netherlanders founding fathers proud. A quick introduction from each and every one of us:

Pieter Staaks, designer and (digital) artist. Works on the technical side of things for the Netherlanders. Wants to support smaller creators and creatives online.〜(꒪꒳꒪)〜

Mayke, the youngest of the group. Chaotic minded but still enjoys messing around with spreadsheets and (simple) technical thingamadings. Has the bad (?) habit of fricking about until things work. Loves reading about the way every week’s Netherlander views our country and culture and hopes to keep this up for a long time!

Marcel, part of twitter-inventory, stroopwafelenthousiast, Integrity Guard. Helps with screening candidates, keeping out the bad apples and preventing all too much fuss. Makes sure the account stays fun, interesting, open-minded and full of stroopwafels. Pushes buttons when needed.

Jeanique, mother, maker, shaker, a sweeper keeper, ready to help where and when she’s needed. Knows a little bit of everything, which makes a lot of something. She loves to meet new people and therefore loves @Netherlanders. On a mission to find the best tweeps Dutch Twitter has to offer and convince them to share their stories with us.

Anna-Maria Giannattasio. Pure of hart and tweets. Part of The Twitter since the start. Event en PR machine. Innovation and connecting people is my fuel. Amsterdam-Italian energy. A large personal network of caring, dedicated people. Positivity will save us all!

Of course we hope to keep introducing you to all the incredible people, places, aspects, food and much more this small country has to offer. While we’re on the subject: if you think you would make an amazing candidate who can share their enthusiasm about the Netherlands, feel free to fill out the form!

We hope to see you all in the new year! Eat loads of oliebollen and stay safe!

pass the torch

After 8 years, 5 months, 2 weeks and 4 days we, Elmer (@Elmeraculous) and Arjen (@haayman), will cease our activities for the Rotation Curation account @Netherlanders. Although this has always been nothing but a hobby for us, the last couple of years we were not able to give the account the attention a great hobby like this deserves. We are proud of where the account is today, but we feel that it is time for new people to take over. People who have fresh energy, new ideas and the creativity to take the account to a higher level. We Netherlanders are interesting enough to have at least 10 times the amount of followers we have at the moment and I’m sure the next owner(s) can achieve this (no pressure).

Do you think you have it in you to pick up where we left off? If so, please send an email to passonthetorch@netherlanders.eu or send a personal message via Twitter to @Elmeraculous. Except for our personal and [admin] tweets we will not be looking actively for our successor. Should nobody have come forward before January 3rd, the account https://twitter.com/netherlanders and the website https://netherlanders.eu will remain open for the public to view, but without any further activity.

We have seen some remarkable Netherlanders in the past 8,5 years and have heard great stories about several friendships being born through the account and we are very proud that we have been a part of that. The last week under our reign (December 28th – January 3rd) has not been filled yet; we would love to see another remarkable Netherlander to conclude our great ride. Do you know who this person should be? Someone you have always wanted to see at the helm of @Netherlanders? Please let us know via a personal message at @Elmeraculous.

We thank you for supporting the account and wish you all the best.

moderation

Last night for the first time in the history of the account we have prematurely discontinued a @Netherlanders’ curation week (not counting the one other case where the curator did not show up). As expected, some people agree, some don’t. Therefore, a little elaboration on this action.

Ever since we started this account 8 years ago we have tried to select curators that would paint an as complete as possible picture of our cute little country. One of the aspects that color this picture of The Netherlands is politics. Although realizing how delicate this subject is we have therefore selected curators on both sides of the political spectrum during the last couple of years.

In all these years we have carefully monitored the tweets by our curators, especially when people would inform us via DM or email about content that might be ‘over the edge’. Although some tweets have previously been ‘on the edge’ this was the first time when a tweet was actually displaying content that was punishable by law. Examples of this punishable fact can be found on the internet (e.g. on this Dutch article https://www.gelderlander.nl/berkelland/boete-voor-achterhoeker-die-politie-uitscheldt-op-facebook~ac588463/) This was reason enough for us to discontinue this week’s curator’s week.

We would like to stress that this was not an easy decision. It was also not an easy decision to nót take action on earlier occasions during the weeks of other curators. You can believe us when we say that we have been close on doing this in the past. But because censoring on the account is the last thing we want, we have not done so until now.

We have always encouraged people to interact with the curator of that moment if you disagree with his/her/their opinion. When people have contacted us directly through DM or email we have always asked for examples of tweets that in their opinion were over the edge. Those examples either never came or were in our view within limits (I’m sure some of you will now start sending examples of tweets in the past, but you will understand that that is now too late).

Mentions on the account of yours truly at this moment are full of accusations concerning the idea that we do give a platform to tweeps with a more conservative perspective on life and shut down tweeps with more progressive points of view. I would like to stress that this is absolutely not the case. Everybody is welcome at the account as long as the few rules that we state are not being violated. These rules are clearly being stated in an instruction document each Netherlander receives prior to the start of their week and include (but are not limited to): no commercial activities, no berating people, groups or authorities or treating them unfairly in any other way, no (re)tweeting in Dutch.

On my personal account I have sincerely called upon you a couple of days ago to introduce us to potential candidates if you think they have something interesting to say about themselves or The Netherlands. This invitation still stands. You can do so via https://netherlanders.eu/candidate/

no more unblocking

For a while we used to refollow and unblock all former Netherlanders every monday morning. This is no longer the case. When a former Netherlander gets blocked he/she will remain blocked. This is done because some people were obnoxious, knowing they would be set free again the next week. We no longer wish to facilitate this behaviour.
